Viognier 2018 AB
Viognier grows at our Perfect Hedge Vineyard in Osoyoos. An hour south of the Naramata Bench winery site, this vineyard is hotter and provides the extra heat units that Viognier requires to ripen fully.
The intense floral aromas are combined with a palate of fresh almond, peach, and honey dew melon. This well balanced wine has a substantial mouth feel with lovely opulence.
Insider Tip: The trick with Viognier is to get optimal ripeness without losing acidity, thus we combine two separate pick dates.
In 2018, we selectively picked the 100% estate grapes from our Perfect Hedge vineyard in Osoyoos on two separate dates in late September. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and fermented in in 40% concrete eggs 32% neutral French oak, and 28% stainless steel. Then it is aged in a combination of oak, stainless steel and concrete to add complexity to the wine.
Our winemaking team has been using concrete eggs since 2011. Concrete fermenters are slightly porous thus allowing the wine to breathe without imparting any flavours. The egg shape brings some unique properties to the fermentation process by keeping the lees in a constant state of movement.
2018 was a long, moderate vintage, slightly cooler than the 5-year average but similar to the long-term norms of the Okanagan. The winter was mild, the spring cool, thus resulting in a somewhat later bud break, followed by a uniform and healthy flowering. The summer was a typical Okanagan summer, hot and dry, which allowed for optimal fruit development. In August, the temperature dropped and the smoke from local wildfires caused a constant cloud over the valley, blocking the sunlight. This slowed photosynthesis and delayed veraison.
Harvest commenced on Sept. 19 with Pinot Gris from OK Falls. September was cooler, which forced a longer growing season and allowed for a steady pace of grape harvesting. The fall weather continued to be warm up until the beginning of November when temperatures dramatically dropped. The last of the Bordeaux Reds were brought into the cellar Nov. 2, just in time to avoid processing outside in the cold. Overall, expect nice flavour complexity, slightly restrained alcohol levels, balanced acidity and freshness.
The Viognier is 100% estate grown on the Perfect Hedge Vineyard on East Bench Osoyoos.
