Blending 2.0
February in the Cellar

What makes a GREAT wine?  Is it the grapes? YES.  Is it winemaking science?  YES. And to us, it is also all about the BLENDING.

Inspired by Bordeaux wines our focus, when we founded the winery, was to create a beautiful, layered, sophisticated wine that showcased the best of what BC can do each year.  The best way to achieve that is by blending and thus is a huge focus with our two flagship wines:  Portfolio & Blind Trust.

With 5 varietals to work with (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec & Petit Verdot), coming from 6 different vineyard sites and then divided into mutliple blocks and varying pick dates, it creates a total of 23 distinct lots.  In addition, we age the wine in classic French oak barrels that also vary by cooper and toast levels, which after 16 months creates uniquely different expressions of the wine and endless combinations to consider for blending.

Over the next few weeks, our winemaking team is sampling, tasting and conducting blending trials to find the best expression of each of the varietals to create the final blends for the 2016 vintage. Hard work but someone has to do it.

Make Wine Not War

That was our winemaker's mantra this week as BC wine became the target for a highly politicized trade war between BC and Alberta.

In an era when we are already hampered by restrictions on shipping Canadian wine between provinces (www.freemygrapes.ca), it's been quite disheartening to find BC wines brought into a trade battle that hurts not just BC wineries, but all the Alberta restaurants, wine stores and consumers that enjoy our wines.

We'd like to sincerely thank all our loyal customers that support local wines, no matter which province you live in.  #makewinenotwar

You can continue to find our wines across Canada at these restaurants and wine stores.  Just enter your postal code.
